Reginald Sheffield (1901-1957), whose real name was Matthew Reginald Sheffield Cassan, was born on February 18, 1901 in London, England, UK.
Whilst a child he acted under the pseudonym of Eric Desmond and there is at least one splendid studio publicity postcard of this photogenic child - thanks to Karen Thompson for sending me a scan of one of them.
In 1913 Reginald Sheffield (billed as Eric Desmond) appeared in David Copperfield
As an adult, he acted under the name Reggie Sheffield and was discovered by the famous British film producer and director Cecil Hepworth. He came from an acting family, and he was younger brother of actress Flora Sheffield.
After appearing in more than 23 British films he moved to Hollywood where he acted with all the big names of the time including Errol Flynn, Bette Davis, Cary Grant, Burt Lancaster and Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. The IMDB entry contains full and impressive details.
He acted as Professor Mayberry in "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger", a series that whilst initially successful, never quite made it..
Reginald’s eldest son Jon Matthew (Johnny) made his stage debut at the age of seven. He was spotted by a Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer talent scout and whisked off to Hollywood to become a world favourite as Boy in “Tarzan Finds a Son” which starred Johnny Weissmuller. He played the part of Boy in a number of more films until he outgrew the part.
